English AB/Middle Grades Education MAT(Social Studies and Language Arts)(non-thesis)

With dual certification in both English/language arts and social studies, advanced coursework on-site in middle schools in a "teaching hospital" Professional Development School model, and substantial experience in middle grades classrooms (grades 4-8), graduates of the Middle Grades Education M.A.T. program are in high demand in school systems across the state of Georgia and beyond. For the last several years, nearly 100% of recent graduates seeking teaching positions had job offers before the end of their final semester in the program. Graduates are recommended for a master's level teaching certificate (T-5), which earns a higher teaching salary in Georgia and in most states across the U.S. Graduates have also gone on to pursue additional graduate degrees (e.g., Education Specialist, doctorate), leadership/education administration certification, teacher leader certification, and advanced degrees in related disciplines, including educational psychology (e.g., applied cognition and development, gifted and creative education), education policy, community or school counseling, school psychology, social work, and human development and family science.

Admission to Program

The Middle Grades Master of Arts in Teaching program uses a cohort model, and cohorts begin in the fall semester each year. Applying to the pathway means applying to join a cohort. Prospective students must apply to the Middle Grades Initial Certification Program, submitting a resume and a statement of purpose with responses to prompts specific to the Middle Grades program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis so that prospective students can apply during the entire year before their intended fall semester start, up to July 1 before fall semester begins in August, assuming space in the Middle Grades Program allows. Applications received after the cohort has reached capacity will still be evaluated and those who are recommended for admission will be placed on a wait list.

All applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or higher by state mandate for admission into a teacher preparation program.
Student transcripts will be evaluated by the Middle Grades Education program to determine if additional content area (English/Language Arts or Social Studies) coursework is needed.

Curriculum

Graduate-level courses that may be used to satisfy undergraduate and graduate program requirements.

The following graduate-level courses can be used to satisfy both graduate and undergraduate program requirements:
(1) EDMG 7010, 3
(2) EDMG 7020, 3
(3) ETAP 7610, 3
(4) SPED 6030, 3

Additional requirements that are unique to this Double Dawgs program:

Everyone in this dual degree pathway will concentrate on English/Language Arts and Social Studies as their two content areas for certification as teachers in grades 4-8. Along with the 36 credit hours for the M.A.T. degree, students must also take EDMG 5020L (3 hours) to obtain certification. Regarding sequence, EDMG 7010 must be taken in the first fall semester; EDMG 7020 must be taken concurrently with EDMG 5020L the following spring semester; EDMG 7035 must be taken concurrently with EDMG 7035L the second/final fall; and EDMG 7040 must be taken concurrently with EDMG 7460 the second/final spring (it is required that students only be enrolled in EDMG 7460 and EDMG 7040 that semester).

Additionally, all students must complete 15 hours of Social Studies coursework and 15 hours of English/Language Arts coursework to be eligible for state certification.

Admission to Graduate Program

To apply for admission, prospective students must apply to the Graduate School. If the student's Grade Point Average for at least 60 hours of undergraduate coursework is 3.0 or above, the student will NOT have to take an entrance exam. If a student's Grade Point Average for 60 hours of coursework is below 3.0, the student will be required to take an entrance exam. The student will have the option of taking either the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller Analogies Test. Students should apply to the Graduate School in the spring semester of Year 4 to begin the graduate portion of the Double Dawgs program in Fall of Year 5.
