Microbiology BS/Microbiology MS

Upon completion of the undergraduate and graduate programs of study, students will be eligible to apply for professional schools in a variety of health fields, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, and veterinary medicine. Students completing the undergraduate and graduate programs of study will also be prepared to enter graduate programs in the biological sciences and for entry-level technical positions in a variety of settings, including university, hospital, government, biotechnology, and other industries.

Admission to Program

After completing 60 hours of undergraduate coursework, students will apply to take 4 graduate courses prior to formal admission to the M.S. program in spring of Year 2.

Students need to have the recommended 3.5 GPA to apply to take graduate courses.

Curriculum

Graduate-level courses that may be used to satisfy undergraduate and graduate program requirements.

• BIOS 7010, Introductory Biostatistics I (3 credit hours)
• MIBO 6450/6450L, Microbial Genetics and Genomics (4 credit hours)
• MIBO 6300, Microbial Diversity and Evolution (2 credit hours)
• MIBO 6090, Prokaryotic Biology (3 credit hours)

Additional requirements that are unique to this Double Dawgs program:

Students must take the core set of courses required for all Microbiology graduate students, which are MIBO 8600 (Prokaryotic Cell Biology), MIBO 8610 (Prokaryotic Physiology and Diversity), MIBO 8150 (Seminar in Microbial Research), and MIBO 8160 (Seminar in Microbiology).

Students are required to conduct an original research project (MIBO 7000, Master's Research), and prepare and defend a Master's thesis on their research (MIBO 7300, Master's Thesis).

Admission to Graduate Program

Students will formally apply to the M.S. program in the fall of Year 4.

After completing 90 hours of undergraduate coursework, students will formally apply to the M.S. program.
• Students need to have a recommended 3.0 GPA to apply to the M.S. program.
• Students must complete all MIBO graduate courses and successfully defend their Master's thesis before they can obtain the M.S.
