International Affairs AB/International Policy MIP(non-thesis)

Many government positions now prefer and even require a master’s degree. The Double Dawg program affords high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to hone their interest and expand their analytic skills in preparation for policy-oriented careers in government, multinational corporations, consultancies, as well as intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations.

The MIP curriculum builds on foundations of theory, method, and practice, addressing a range of contemporary security concerns with an emphasis on interagency collaboration. Specialized tracks focusing on nonproliferation and human security prepare students for careers inside and outside of the government.

While most students seek the MIP as their final professional degree, the Double Dawg program will also allow students to earn their master’s with the ability of later entering a PhD or other advanced degree programs and pursuing careers in academia.

Admission to Program

Given the higher curriculum and academic performance requirements of graduate degrees, care needs to be taken to select students that are both academically prepared and motivated to complete the AB/MIP. The AB/MIP program admission standards and process will be very similar to that currently used by the Graduate School and the Honors program.

To be admitted into the dual degree pathway, students must have completed at least 60 hours of resident credit at UGA, at least 9 hours of the 30 required international affairs credit hours completed or in progress and at least a 3.5 UGA GPA at the time of application. We expect most students will be eligible to apply for admission to the pathway in the fall semester of their third year at UGA. To be approved, a preliminary plan of study must be approved by the undergraduate advisor and the departmental graduate coordinator.

Curriculum

Graduate-level courses that may be used to satisfy undergraduate and graduate program requirements.

To complete the Bachelor’s degree in international affairs, students will need to satisfy the existing required courses (30 credit hours) in international affairs and take 12 credit hours in graduate-level international policy courses that would count toward the 30 credit hours of general electives required by the major.

The M.I.P program of study comprises 36 credit hours (12 classes) and the completion of a capstone project. There are two thematically designed tracks; an International Security and Nonproliferation track and a Human Security track. Students are required to take six core courses, four track-specific courses, and two general electives. The following four M.I.P graduate courses will be used to satisfy the undergraduate requirements:

INTL 6000: Foundations of International Policy
INTL 6200: Pre-seminar in International Affairs
INTL 6010: Research Methods in International Policy
INTL 7000: Data Analytics and Presentation Skills

Additional requirements that are unique to this Double Dawgs program:

None

Admission to Graduate Program

Admission to the dual degree pathway does not guarantee admission to the graduate program.

Students must apply to the MIP program during the spring of their junior year. Students will follow the same application guidelines and procedures required of all MIP students (http://spia.uga.edu/degree/MIP/). Admission to the MIP program requires submitting a Graduate School application, one unofficial transcript from each institution of higher education, official GRE general test score report, personal statement (conveying career aspirations and how the MIP supports your career goals), curriculum vita or resume, and three letters of recommendation. (Please note that additional requirements for international applicants are outlined on the program website (http://spia.uga.edu/degree/MIP/). TOEFL scores will also be required from any applicant whose primary language is not English.
