Geography AB/Urban Planning and Design MUPD

This program will prepare students for a career in urban planning or for future research in urban studies and urban geography.

Admission to Program

Undergraduate students will apply to the joint A.B./M.U.P.D. program the fall semester of their third year of the undergraduate program. Student applications will be reviewed by the undergraduate coordinator in Geography and the director of the M.U.P.D. program. The director of the M.U.P.D. program has final authority to grant admission.

Undergraduate students applying to the joint A.B./M.U.P.D. program must submit a letter of intent, portfolio of creative work, and complete a joint interview with the directors of the A.B. and M.U.P.D. programs.

Curriculum

Graduate-level courses that may be used to satisfy undergraduate and graduate program requirements.

Although both programs have an interest in similar social themes and issues, they provide complementary rather than overlapping knowledge and skills. Courses in the Urban Planning and Design program are not equivalent in content or focus to the required geography courses. To complete the Bachelor’s degree in Geography (AB), students will need to satisfy the existing required courses (25-27 credit hours) in geography and take 12 credit hours in graduate level courses in College of Environment and Design that would count toward the general electives required by the major. The following courses can count as electives for the undergraduate degree in Geography as well as for the core courses required for the graduate program:

EDES 6270, 3 Environmental Design Use of GIS
PLAN 6210, 3 Graphic Representation in Planning and Design
PLAN 6520, 5 Urban Planning and Design Studio I

Additional requirements that are unique to this Double Dawgs program:

Students may also count up to three graduate-level Geography courses, based on their substantive academic interests and intended career trajectory, as electives in the Master of Urban Planning and Design program of study. Students seeking to use Geography courses as electives must receive prior approval from the Master of Urban Planning and Design advisor.

Admission to Graduate Program

Undergraduate students applying to the joint A.B./M.U.P.D. program must submit a letter of intent, portfolio of creative work, and complete a joint interview with the directors of the A.B. and M.U.P.D. programs.
