English AB/English MA

The A.B./M.A. in English is designed for our most ambitious and intellectually adventurous students. In this accelerated course of study, students will undertake advanced, individualized research projects before the end of their A.B., projects that will feed into their MA thesis. Students with an M.A. in English go into professional writing, nonprofit management, university administration, secondary and post-secondary education, publishing, marketing, and more. The dual degree also prepares you to enter into a doctoral program, whether in English or in a related field.

Admission to Program

Students interested in entering the pathway to the dual degree program should plan to attend the Information Sessions held by the English Department Graduate Coordinator. Please contact the English Graduate Office, or see the English Department website (english.uga.edu) for the time of the next information session.

After a student has 70 hours in the A.B. program and has taken at least four upper division ENGL courses, they will be able to apply to the dual degree pathway. Applicants must hold at least a 3.7 GPA in the major. Students will apply in January of their third year to enter the dual degree pathway in the fall semester of their fourth year. Note that admission to the pathway does not guarantee admission to the M.A. program.

The application package will consist of
• A one-page (single spaced) statement of intent that explains why the student is pursuing the dual degree
• One to two writing samples, totaling 10 pages
• Two recommendations from ENGL professors who can speak to the student’s preparedness to undertake graduate coursework

Upon entrance into the Double Dawgs pathway (fall semester of the fourth year), the student will apply to the UGA Graduate School for formal admission into the Graduate Program.

Curriculum

Graduate-level courses that may be used to satisfy undergraduate and graduate program requirements.

Up to 12 hours of graduate courses will be used to satisfy requirements of both the English A.B. and M.A. degrees. All three-credit graduate level ENGL courses may count toward these 12 hours except ENGL 7000 and 7300; one graduate level course outside the department may count toward the university degree requirements and the English MA coursework requirement.

Additional requirements that are unique to this Double Dawgs program:

ENGL 6890 – Research Methods

Admission to Graduate Program

Students will apply to the English M.A. program during the fall of their fourth year. Students will follow the same guidelines and procedures as required for any applicant to the M.A. program (http://www.english.uga.edu/application-information). The application is in two parts. The following is submitted to the Graduate School: the online application form; unofficial transcripts; three letters of recommendation; GRE scores; TOEFL scores for non-native English speakers. The following is submitted to the English Department Graduate Office: statement of intent; critical writing sample; CV; TA/RA application form. Applications from Double Dawg students will be assessed in the same fashion as every other applicant to the MA program.
